Internationally renowned for his outstanding works in his numerous capacities, as Caribbean scholar, cultural activist, trade union educator, political analyst and international consultant, among others, the late Prof. Rex Nettleford added to his résumé, member of the Advisory Board of the Spanish Jamaican Foundation in 2006. During his time in the Foundation, he played a pivotal role, enriching our Foundation with his experience, wisdom and intellect, which undoubtedly earned him the respect and distinction of all.

Secrets Resorts, spearheaded by the Spanish group Fuerte Hotels, recently opened its five star resorts, in May of 2010, “Secrets Wild Orchid” and “Secrets St. James”, each boasting 350 suites with varying amenities.
The opening, entailing an evening of entertainment, cocktails and speeches was well attended by dignitaries, government and tourism officials, including the PM Bruce Golding, special guests, owners and representatives of the media.
The resort’s construction is the result of partnership with private investors and shareholders not only from Spain, but from other countries. These include local financial institutions, National Commercial Bank, entities in Latin America and US based group AM Resorts.
Secrets is a member of the Preferred Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, and offers guests all inclusive luxuries and amenities, Spanish style.
This new investment, ‘underpinned by partnerships’, has definitely opened doors for the Jamaican economy, contributing greatly to Jamaica’s tourism sector, with the creation of 1500 jobs during the construction phase, and an additional 950 in the resort operations.

The Spanish Jamaican Foundation in May of this year had its 3rd Advisory Board meeting at Secrets Resorts & Spa. The Foundation was honoured to have present the Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding, who seemingly had a vested interest in the work of the Foundation. Brief discussions were held, in which the role that the Foundation has played in Jamaica was discussed as well as the achievements and projects undertaken since its inception in 2006. With much of its focus being on the development of Jamaica, the Foundation has embarked on numerous social, educational, cultural and sporting projects, and has to date spent an approximate J$70,000,000 on such ventures.
The Foundation counts on the contributions of its Executive Board members, the Embassy of Spain and other entities to fund these projects.
The Prime Minister commended the efforts of the Foundation, indicating that significant contributions have been made to the Jamaican society, and implored the Ambassador and members to continue with this initiative.
Present at the meeting were Messers: Vincent Chang, Rodney Davis, David Hall, Tony Hart, Paul Issa, William Mahfood and Milton Samuda.
Members of the Executive Board were also in attendance, including Fernando Bosque (MBJ Aiports), Miguel Cano (Bahia Principe), Antonio Casado (Secrets Resorts), Juan Carlos Donis (Cala Telecom Services), Phillip Hofer (Iberostar Hotels & Resorts), Dimitris Kosvogiannis (Grand Palladium Resorts) Rafael Matas (Excellence Group) and Frank Sondern (RIU Hotels). Additionally co-owners of the Secrets Resort, Doña Isabel García Bardón, Isabel Luque García and Pepe Luque, were on hand to share in the occasion.

On the invitation of the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation, Emilio Butragueño, internationally acclaimed former striker, and prominent member of the Real Madrid Football Club in the 80’s, best known for his remarkable football abilities and contribution to the club’s success in numerous national league competitions as well as UEFA cups, visited Jamaica in April 2010, to declare the much anticipated official opening of the Real Madrid School for Social Integration in Jamaica.
The School, the first of its kind in the English speaking Caribbean, joins a number of others created for Social Integration worldwide, in Latin America (Colombia, Chile, Uruguay), among other countries.
Operations have been temporarily established on lands belonging to Rose Hall Developments, adjacent to the Hilton Hotel with the enrollment of 30 boys and girls, between the ages of 6 and 12 from the less privileged areas of Montego Bay. Under management of former Reggae Boyz goal keeper, Aaron Lawrence, the children will be taught the necessary football skills, but more importantly life skills, solidarity and respect, imperatives for successes in life. On the 27th of March, the Jamaica Heritage Trail welcomed other additions to the existing trail extending along the north coastal lines of the island and Kingston. Two signboards were installed, one for Rio Bueno, sponsored by SJF and the other for Mammee Bay, sponsored by RIU group.
Following those installations, the Negril signboard also sponsored by RIU group was inaugurated, shortly thereafter on the 2nd of July 2010. These new additions bring to 15, the total number of signboards erected in Jamaica. Continue reading »
